Stomach Ulcer: Answers and Questions

Stomach ulcer is suffered by a bit less than 10 % of adult population. Such a wide prevalence of the pathology makes it a real social problem. What is the stomach ulcer? How serious is this disease and how are diagnostics and treatment conducted? You will find answers to these and other questions in this article.

What is stomach ulcer?

Stomach and dodecadactylon ulcer are chronic diseases, described as formation of a defect on the dodecadactylon and stomach walls. Seriousness of ulcer can be various, however, ulcer always gets deeper than the mucous membrane of the stomach that distinguishes it from superficial mucous damages which usually happen with gastritis (inflammation of the stomach mucous membrane) or duodenitis (inflammation of the dodecadactylon mucous membrane). Sometimes, ulcer development leads to body perforation that is when ulcer "eats" the stomach walls through.

What are the reasons for stomach ulcer?

The reasons for ulcer occurrence are not studied completely. However, the medicine has considerably promoted in this area recently. Till the 80s of the last century, practically nobody doubted that the reason for ulcer is the raised acidity of gastric juice and superfluous allocation of acid in stomach cells. However in the beginning of our century, the views on nosogenesis (reasons and mechanisms of development) of stomach ulcer have changed radically: with the great degree of accuracy it has been proved that the reason for ulcer is a special microbe (Helicobacter pylori) capable to survive in stomach and dodecadactylon mucous and to destroy it.

Cytotec (Misoprostol) is applied for cutting down the risk of infection with stomach ulcers in the affected who take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications.
